Not Just Surviving But Thriving

The #1 habit to develop is to take care of you.

Being diagnosed with and living daily with a chronic disease is not easy and will forever change the trajectory of your life. But that does not need to be the end of the story. By seeing a diagnosed disease not as a death sentence but a blessing in disguise, you can look with a different perspective at your life. You have the blessing of your body telling you that your lifestyle habits (how the way you live affects your body) could be better, and with some effort, it will show you what the cause and solution could be. You need to develop the belief that your body innately knows how to be healthy and can heal itself if given the right environment and support. It is within your power to provide that healing environment. Give yourself permission when needed, support when necessary, and ideas to think about alongside the conventional medical treatment box.

Everyone on the planet has something that is amiss with their health; most just don’t acknowledge it or know it yet.

You can be a key player in your health, and it is in your best interest to take responsibility and take on the executive director’s role. I encourage you to be a top-level executive; the architect embodying not only the creative designer but also the visionary, the builder, the collaborator, the planner, and the supervisor of your life. Manage your health personally and like your life depends on it—because it does!

Chronic illnesses can be managed by reducing symptoms and allowing space for your body to heal. Healing Habits is about what ‘managing’ your disease takes. It is about what it means to release damaging habits to create space for new healing habits. It is about how to embody those habits into a healing lifestyle. It is about how to create an identity that sees you as a healthy person supporting and taking responsibility to help your body heal itself. It is to remind you of the power you have over your life to be anything you want to be, and that includes being healthy and happy.

You can decide how sick you want to be— and you can help your body heal itself.

The book presents twenty principles and habits that are a foundation for you to begin to define what and how you want your life to look. They are the foundational behaviors that you can use as your operating manual. There are no outlandish or new concepts, just a reminder of how the way we live and the things we do in our modern life affect our physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies.

Conventional medicine has its place in chronic illness and disease management and is very much needed to diagnose and treat acute symptoms, begin reversing inflammation, or repair damage. Unfortunately, that same conventional medicine makes us believe we have no choice but to continue to only follow that standard of care, which many have found is not the best way to manage a disease over time. It simply is not sustainable, nor does it promote real healing in the body, which is ultimately needed to reduce symptoms. If you are ready to redefine your disease management into health management and ready to see a different way to address your symptoms and diagnosis, try something outside the norm, then these healing habits can be your foundation.

These are practices that each and every one of us can accomplish and incorporate into our daily lives to finally take control over our disease and life. You should, in every circumstance, have the choice to take control of your own health without ever feeling like the victim of your disease. You can no longer be reliant or confident in living with the mass-produced lifestyle inherited from society, government, and big pharma. You need to take back your own body, mind, and soul and make your life worth living in a healthy, more enjoyable way.

I have found that when adverse things do come around, giving yourself the grace to see beyond immediate circumstances is all about belief. Believing you have the power within you, believing your body is a living organism that desires optimal functioning, believing that there is enough information available, believing that you have control over your own health. Life itself is about the ups and downs, the highs and lows, the ‘ecstatic’ and ‘please God help me’ moments; none of us escape that reality. But if you so choose, you can create your new normal, and rather than continuing to live a life that supports illness, instead live one that supports your body to heal itself. It is my hope that by telling my story as a colleague and friend, you can see yourself as someone who can begin to take care of yourself and have great success doing it.

Life does not stand still, and each day we are pushed to become

the future selves we didn’t know we could become.
